Description: P.J. Olivier took full advantage in a match at the week-end of the fact that Kingswood were playing their first match as a new team after having been back for only three days. P.J. Olivier were first to score when Coetzee dribbled over the line and Kingswood failed to touch down. Erasmus converted. The line-out work was scrappy on both sides and in this field P.J. Olivier were heavily penalised for lifting. It was from one such penalty that Ingram succeeded in making the score 5-3. The Kingswood side came back strongly but failed to round off their movements. Twice P.J. Olivier capitalised on such mistakes. Both times it was Erasmus, P.J. Olivier’s star left wing, who scored, converting once himself (13-3). Next it was Kingswood to score. From a tight scrum on the line, Collett was tackled in going for the line, but managed to flick the ball to Anderson on the wing, who jinked his way in the corner to make the final score 13-6.

Description: SALISBURY. — Eastern Province Schools, playing the more enterprising rugby, running with the ball at every opportunity, ran out comfortable winners by 36 points (six goals, a try and a penalty goal), to 11 (a goal, a try, and a penalty goal) against a disappointing Griqualand West Schools team, who could never get into top gear and were 8-21 behind at half-time. Eastern Province thus won all three of their games in the 1970 Craven Week tournament. The Eastern Province scrum-half, C. van Niekerk was the outstanding plaver on the field. He fed his fly-half well and initiated several good tries with some fine breaks around the base of the scrum. For Griqualand West eighth man Erasmus had a good game. Eastern Province’s points were scored through tries by left-wing Van Niekerk (two), centre Katherine, lock M. Botha, lock F. Botha, scrum-half C. van Niekerk, right-wing Watson (one try each), centre Cowley (five conversions), and fly-half Horn, who kicked a penalty goal and conversion. Griqualand West’s points came from a try by scrum-half Watt a try by centre Pienaar, a conversion and penalty goal by their fly- half Jooste.

Description: Praise for E.P. Eastern Province were generally regarded as the best of the 24 teams who took part in the seventh Danie Craven Rugby Week for schools teams in Salisbury last week. We hear from a source close to the S.A. Rugby Board that, had the teams from Cape Province not had to return early in order to be back at their schools, the final attraction would have been between Eastern Province and Natal—and, according to knowledgeable critics, Eastern Province would have walked this match as well. Eastern Province had the rare distinction of playing in the opening match of the week—a match which Dr Danie Craven, President of the South African Rugby Board and father of the idea and who has
seen all seven Craven Weeks, described as the finest opening match of any Week to date. Most tries In addition Eastern Province scored the most tries of all the teams—a total of 21 with only three against. Dr Craven described this Eastern Province team as the best to wear the red and black jersey at Craven Week and one of the best teams ever to play in the Craven Week. He has always had his qualms about the Eastern Province teams but this one was outstanding “Not a particularly heavy team, but very well balanced and extremely mobile, with the loose forwards doing great work and the half-backs Van Niekerk and William Horn, and the centres Gavin Cowley and Neil Ward outstanding. In the three matches, Eastern Province also scored the most points - 100 with only 22 against. Formula Dr Craven has devised a formula by which the attack and defence of a team is measured by the number of tries scored. Eastern Province also won this hands down with a total tally of 135 points, followed by Eastern Transvaal with 126. The 1971 Craven Week, will be held in Kimberley and in 1972 in Potchefstroom. It is possible that the 1973 week will be held in Stellenbosch in honour of Dr Craven. This will be the 10th Craven Week. Danie Craven believes that, if Eastern Province retains a large majori

Description: Rugby 1970 David van Niekerk Article 1: Praise for E.P. Eastern Province had the rare distinction of playing in the opening match of the week—a match which Dr Danie Craven, President of the South African Rugby Board and father of the idea and who has seen all seven Craven Weeks, described as the finest opening match of any Week to date. Danie Craven believes that, if Eastern Province retains a large majority of the 1970 players, either in employment or at the University, Eastern Province seniors have very tough teams in years to come. Article 2: Big win for E.P. schools SALISBURY. Article 3: Eastern Province ran out victors by six goals and five tries to one penalty goal. Star of the Eastern Province side was the speedy left wing, D. van Niekerk who crossed his opponents’ line five times. The most deserved try of the match, however, came in the second half from Eastern Province’s flyhalf, Horn, who scored after initiating a move at mid-field. Eastern Province scorers were: Van Niekerk (5), Tolmay (2), Rademeyer (1), Horn (1) and Watson (2). Cowley kicked five conversions and Horn one. The only Natal Country Districts score came in the first half from a fine 50 yard penalty, kicked by the number eight, J. de Vaal.

Description: Dale College beat Kingswood 16-3 a game in King Williamstown at the week-end. Kingswood started off well with their backline running with determination, and only sound defence kept them from scoring. Slowly Dale kicked their way back into the game, their loose forwards playing well and dominating the loose balls. Dale scored first after a loose scrum when their scrum-half kicked onto the Kingswood full-back, Colley, who fumbled and kicked ahead. From the loose scrum that developed Dale sent the ball to the wing, who beat Allen and scored far out. The conversion failed. The second try came when the Dale scrum-half kicked a high cross kick. A loose scrum developed, with Dale going blind to their wing who scored in the corner. The conversion failed. Soon after half-time Dale were penalised for a line-out infringement. Turner put over the penalty. The score remained 6-3 for most of the second half. Right at the end Dale scored twice. First their fly-half went for a drop at posts. This missed but turned out to be a good cross kick for their wing to gather and score under the posts. The try was converted. Dale then again got a quick heel from a loose scrum and with the Kingswood backs sadly out of position, the Dale centre shot over to score under the posts. The conversion made the final score 16-3.

Description: Kingswood beat St. Andrew’s 16-9 in an action-packed game played in overcast in wet conditions at St. Andrew’s at the week-end. Kingswood dominated most of the line-outs and scrums and tackled extremely well. Kingswood scored first when White, flank, followed up a kick at goal by Becker which failed. St. Andrew’s mishandled and White gathered to score under the posts. Becker converted (5-0). Chase, the St. Andrew’s centre, replied with a magnificent penalty kick (5-3). Watson, Kingswood eighth man, playing an excellent game, was next to score when he took the ball at the back of the line-out on the St. Andrew’s line and barged his way over. Becker failed with the conversion (8-3). This was also the half-time score. The score remained at 8-3 for the next 15 minutes before Anderson, Kingswood centre, intercepted a pass to run 50 yards and score under the poles. Turner converted (13-3). Chase kicked two more penalties for St. Andrew’s, making the score 13-9. Kingswood came back strongly and completely dominated the opposition. In the closing stages of the game the Kingswood right-wing, R. O’Neill, had a good run and dived over in the corner. The conversion failed (1619) [16-9]. The score remained 16-9 to the end. It was a spectacular game, played in a good spirit and enjoyed by spectators.

Description: MUIR beat Kingswood 11-8 in an inter-school’s match in Uitenhage this afternoon. Playing under adverse weather conditions, back play was kept to a minimum. The game started as a dour forward struggle with Kingswood superior in the set scrums and line-outs. Muir, however, scored first when Harvey, No. 8, won possession in a loose maul to fall over the line. McLaughlin converted. Kingswood replied with a penalty by Ingram; full-back, after a scrum infringement. The second half was characterised bv tigerish forward play by the Muir team, not allowing the Kingswood backs to come into play. Kingswood drew level when Turner, centre, scored a try after a fumble by the Muir backs. Ingram, again converted. Muir clinched matters when Rudman, front ranker, fell over the line from a loose scrum. Kingswood players who did well were Moss, (front rank), Collier (hooker) and Matthews (lock) while Harvey, Meyer (flank) and Killian (fly-half) shone for Muir.

Description: 1970 Kingswood lose 16-3 to Dale Dale College beat Kingswood 16-3 a game in King Williamstown at the week-end.

Description: Sports - Kingswood beat St Andrew’s BEFORE a large crowd in bitterly cold weather and on a slippery field, Kingswood deservedly beat St Andrew’s by 19 points to nine; This was the first time Kingswood had beaten St Andrew’s since 1962. Kingswood forwards excelled themselves in the loose and set scrums although outweighed. They were faster and continually hunted as a pack. They kept up the pressure throughout the game except for a short spell in the second half when the fast pace of the game began to tell. Their fiery play harassed the St Andrew's threes into errors and their three-quarters came up very quickly in defence. St Andrew’s did not play badly but they did not play well and never settled down. At one stage with the score at 13-9 in the middle of the second half, it appeared as if St Andrew’s were going to fight back and Kingswood might be feeling the effects of their strenuous efforts. But when Kingswood added a further goal there was no doubt about the outcome of this exciting, hard but clean game, well controlled by Mr E. Rothman. Kingswood were first to score when a penalty kick fell just short and following up very quickly, White gathered and was over, for Becker to convert. After a period in which both sides attacked in turn, Chase put over a fine penalty. From a line-out near the St Andrew’s goal line, Watson gathered and forced his way over for an unconverted try. Half-time arrived with Kingswood leading 8-3. The next try was a brilliant solo run of 70 yards by Anderson who intercepted a ball after St Andrew’s had heeled from a set scrum. Becker converted. Shortly afterwards Chase kicked another good penalty and a little later Chase succeeded with another penalty. Kingwood’s final points came from a fine 35-yard run by the wing, O’Neill, for an unconverted try. ARTICLE 2: K’WOOD FIRST VICTORY KINGSWOOD ... .. .. ..19 ST ANDREW’S ... .. .. ..9 IN an exciting and very good schools rugby game played in Grahamstown today Kingswood scored their first victory for nine years over St Andrew’s when they beat them by 16 points to nine after leading 8-3 at half-time. Kingswood were the first to score after ten minutes. A penalty which fell under the poles was mishandled by St Andrews and White was up to take the ball and score under the poles. Becker converted (5-0). St Andrew’s replied with a very good penalty kick by Chase, who kicked 40 yards (5-3). Kingswood increased their lead when Watson, their No. 8. forced his way over near the poles. The conversion failed (8-3). Midway through the second half Anderson, the Kingswood centre, intercepted and ran 50 yards to score under the poles. Becker converted. (13-3). St Andrew’s were awarded another penalty and Chase converted making it 13-6. Another penalty by Chase made it 13-9. Kingswood were superior in all phases at this stage and went further ahead when O’Neill, their rightwing, went over in the corner. (16-9). ARTICLE 3: Kingswood has convincing win Kingswood beat St. In the closing stages of the game the Kingswo
