Description: IN an exhilarating display of running rugby, Kingswood College, Grahamstown, narrowly beat Selborne 11-9 in the main curtain-raiser to the Border-Transvaal Currie Cup match in East London this afternoon. Play swung excitingly from one end of the field to the other as both sets of three-quarters attacked in turn. A feature of the game was the stout defences of the teams, though Selborne could not always hold Van Niekerk, the Kingswood left wing, in check. Selborne opened the scoring when Edkins brought off an interception to run in from 20 yards out and score. Just on half-time Van Niekerk shook off three tackles in a splendid run and the conversion by Salmon put Kingswood into a 5-3 lead. Ten minutes into the second half Selborne failed to stop a foot rush and Anderson grabbed the ball for a try close in. Again Salmon converted. Selborne came back with exciting play by their three-quarters and Steenkamp rounded off a good move for a try near the corner. Shortly before the final whistle Weber succeeded with a simple penalty.

Description: P.J. Olivier took full advantage in a match at the week-end of the fact that Kingswood were playing their first match as a new team after having been back for only three days. P.J. Olivier were first to score when Coetzee dribbled over the line and Kingswood failed to touch down. Erasmus converted. The line-out work was scrappy on both sides and in this field P.J. Olivier were heavily penalised for lifting. It was from one such penalty that Ingram succeeded in making the score 5-3. The Kingswood side came back strongly but failed to round off their movements. Twice P.J. Olivier capitalised on such mistakes. Both times it was Erasmus, P.J. Olivier’s star left wing, who scored, converting once himself (13-3). Next it was Kingswood to score. From a tight scrum on the line, Collett was tackled in going for the line, but managed to flick the ball to Anderson on the wing, who jinked his way in the corner to make the final score 13-6.

Selborne opened the scoring when fullback Weber gathered the ball on the halfway line and ran through the whole side to score under the posts. He converted his own try. Selborne went further ahead when flank forward Cronje barged over near the corner and Weber again converted with a good kick. In the second half Kingswood unluckily lost their fullback Ingram who was injured, and played the rest of the half with only 14 men. Selborne’s points in the second half came from tries by Baisley, Whitfield and Weber, who also converted his own try.

Description: SALISBURY. — Eastern Province Schools, playing the more enterprising rugby, running with the ball at every opportunity, ran out comfortable winners by 36 points (six goals, a try and a penalty goal), to 11 (a goal, a try, and a penalty goal) against a disappointing Griqualand West Schools team, who could never get into top gear and were 8-21 behind at half-time. Eastern Province thus won all three of their games in the 1970 Craven Week tournament. The Eastern Province scrum-half, C. van Niekerk was the outstanding plaver on the field. He fed his fly-half well and initiated several good tries with some fine breaks around the base of the scrum. For Griqualand West eighth man Erasmus had a good game. Eastern Province’s points were scored through tries by left-wing Van Niekerk (two), centre Katherine, lock M. Botha, lock F. Botha, scrum-half C. van Niekerk, right-wing Watson (one try each), centre Cowley (five conversions), and fly-half Horn, who kicked a penalty goal and conversion. Griqualand West’s points came from a try by scrum-half Watt a try by centre Pienaar, a conversion and penalty goal by their fly- half Jooste.

Description: Praise for E.P. Eastern Province were generally regarded as the best of the 24 teams who took part in the seventh Danie Craven Rugby Week for schools teams in Salisbury last week. We hear from a source close to the S.A. Rugby Board that, had the teams from Cape Province not had to return early in order to be back at their schools, the final attraction would have been between Eastern Province and Natal—and, according to knowledgeable critics, Eastern Province would have walked this match as well. Eastern Province had the rare distinction of playing in the opening match of the week—a match which Dr Danie Craven, President of the South African Rugby Board and father of the idea and who has
seen all seven Craven Weeks, described as the finest opening match of any Week to date. Most tries In addition Eastern Province scored the most tries of all the teams—a total of 21 with only three against. Dr Craven described this Eastern Province team as the best to wear the red and black jersey at Craven Week and one of the best teams ever to play in the Craven Week. He has always had his qualms about the Eastern Province teams but this one was outstanding “Not a particularly heavy team, but very well balanced and extremely mobile, with the loose forwards doing great work and the half-backs Van Niekerk and William Horn, and the centres Gavin Cowley and Neil Ward outstanding. In the three matches, Eastern Province also scored the most points - 100 with only 22 against. Formula Dr Craven has devised a formula by which the attack and defence of a team is measured by the number of tries scored. Eastern Province also won this hands down with a total tally of 135 points, followed by Eastern Transvaal with 126. The 1971 Craven Week, will be held in Kimberley and in 1972 in Potchefstroom. It is possible that the 1973 week will be held in Stellenbosch in honour of Dr Craven. This will be the 10th Craven Week. Danie Craven believes that, if Eastern Province retains a large majori

Description: For the first time in 14 years, Kingswood 1st XV beat Dale in a hard, fast game played here on Saturday. After only four minutes of play the Kingswood left-wing, J. Allen, scored far out when Dale failed to get touch near their line. The conversion failed. Although both teams came within close range of the opposition’s line, play often returned to midfield on account of the excellent defence displayed by both Dale and Kingswood. Shortly after half-time, the Kingswood lock Botha gathered a loose ball and passed out to prop Wienand who ran 40 yards to score far out. The conversion failed. In the 10th minute, Dale were successful with a penalty, making the score 6-3. Not long afterwards, the Kingswood fly-half Ciorovich cross-kicked for right wing Gosling to score an excellent try near the corner. Once again the conversion failed. Next to score were Dale when their fly-half put over a drop to narrow the margin to 9-6. Another attempt at goal by Dale failed in the final minutes of the game, leaving the final score 9-6.

Description: GRAHAMSTOWN - In a very exciting rugby game, Kingswood beat Gill 11-3 but the game was more even than the score suggests. The honours broke even in the first half, with Kingswood winning the line-outs and Gill the scrums and the teams changed over with a blank scoresheet. After the resumption and against the run of play D. van Niekerk, the Kirkwood [Kingswood] left wing, collected a loose ball in his own 25 and ran 180 yards to score under the posts. Ingram converted. Gill counter-attacked strongly and were rewarded with a good try by their No 8 Van der Spuy. The conversion failed. Kingswood went further ahead when Ingram, full-back, put over a penalty and then the try of the match came when C. van Niekerk, the Kingswood scrum-half, broke on the blind-side, kicked ahead and won a 40 yard race to dot down. The kick failed but Kingswood deservedly won 11-3.

St John’s were the first to score when their fly-half, Gordon-Bennett, scored close to the posts. They went further ahead when Gordon-Bennett goaled a penalty. Ingram converted to give Kingswood an 8-6 lead. Kingswood went further ahead when Gosling, right wing, gathered a loose ball and ran well to score under the poles. Description: Dale College beat Kingswood 16-3 a game in King Williamstown at the week-end. Kingswood started off well with their backline running with determination, and only sound defence kept them from scoring. Slowly Dale kicked their way back into the game, their loose forwards playing well and dominating the loose balls. Dale scored first after a loose scrum when their scrum-half kicked onto the Kingswood full-back, Colley, who fumbled and kicked ahead. From the loose scrum that developed Dale sent the ball to the wing, who beat Allen and scored far out. The conversion failed. The second try came when the Dale scrum-half kicked a high cross kick. A loose scrum developed, with Dale going blind to their wing who scored in the corner. The conversion failed. Soon after half-time Dale were penalised for a line-out infringement. Turner put over the penalty. The score remained 6-3 for most of the second half. Right at the end Dale scored twice. First their fly-half went for a drop at posts. This missed but turned out to be a good cross kick for their wing to gather and score under the posts. The try was converted. Dale then again got a quick heel from a loose scrum and with the Kingswood backs sadly out of position, the Dale centre shot over to score under the posts. The conversion made the final score 16-3.

Description: Kingswood and Graeme rugby teams drew 5-5 in a hard-fought game on Gane field at the week-end. Graeme started off
on top, but gradually the Kingswood forwards took command and in the second half the Kingswood backs threw the ball around and looked dangerous on many occasions. The Graeme pack was not allowed to play with its usual fire and Kingswood dominated the tight and the loose play. Early on in the game Graeme often looked dangerous with both wings having good runs, and it was Graeme who scored first from one such good run with a try by Buckley far out. Edge
made no mistake with the conversion. Kingswood came back strongly with their forwards backing-up well, Watson, Aspeling and White forming the spearhead of attack. It was Aspeling who scored next when he took a high pass to dive over. Turner converted. This
was also the half-time score. Although the second half did not produce any further score, it certainly produced the rugby, with both sides throwing the ball around desperately trying to cross the line. Good defence saved any further scoring. Kingswood had a number of good switches, with the ball going backwards and forwards across the field, but the score was still 5-5 when the final whistle blew.

Description: EAST LONDON — Kingswood College seized their chances to beat Selborne College 10-9 in an inter-schools rugby match on the BRU Ground here on Saturday. The visitors played their best football against the wind in the second half, but their opponents, splendidly served by their loose forwards and front row, had enough of the ball to win and would have done so had the centres fed their wings. Both sides disappointed with unnecessarily high tackling. The backs, too, might have coped better with the strong wind sweeping the length of the field, had they kept a closer formation. Kingswood’s points came from tries by D. van Niekerk, an impressive left wing, and Anderson, both of which were converted by Salmon. Selborne replied with tries by Edkins and Steenkamp and a penalty by Weber.

Description: In a thrilling inter-schools match on Saturday, Graeme College beat Kingswood by 15 points to 6 on the Graeme main field. The game was characterised by many attempts at drop goals and forward play. Scoring opened after 20 minutes when Wellington, the Kingswood fly-half, put over an excellent drop kick to make the score 3-0. Soon afterwards the Graeme fly-half, Edge, replied with a drop kick of similar calibre. Then Kingswood moved into the lead again after a successful penalty kick in front of Graeme’s posts. Just on half-time, Edge put his second successful drop over, making the haif-time score 6-6. Halfway into the second half the Graeme wing, Watson, succeeded with two penalties to make the score 12 6 in Graeme’s favour. With a few minutes left to play, the Graeme forwards, who dominated up front, stormed to the Kingswood line for their 8th man, King, to score, the conversion failed. Kingswood 2nd 8, Graeme 2nd 5. Kingswood U15A 6, Graeme U15A 6. Kingswood U14A 3, Graeme U14A 3.

Description: In an exciting game that swung from one end of the field to the other, Grey 1st beat Kingswood 1st by 11 points to 5 on Gane Field on Saturday. Kingswood played into the sun first and started off with good attacking rugby, but it was the Grey backs that were on top and in the 12th minute they scored. The conversion failed. The clever Grey 8th man, Karp, next broke from a loose scrum and after a good run, gave the ball to centre Cowley who scored. He converted his own try. Shortly after half-time, Kingswood’s left wing, D. van Niekerk, shot into the line to take a reverse pass from Wellington, and after a loose maul had formed the Kingswood captain, C. van Niekerk, went over for a superb try. Full-back Salmon converted. Not long afterwards Grey left-wing Rice scored near the corner. The try was unconverted. With both teams attacking alternatively form this point onwards, the game ended without a change in score.

    Description: ST ANDREW’S … 6 kingswood … 3 GRAHAMSTOWN. — St Andrew’s
beat Kingswood 6-3 in a good, hard
fought game. St Andrew’s opened the score, with a good try after ten minutes with a full line movement and Womersley, on the left wing, went over to score far out. The conversion attempt failed. Both sides played good rugby and came near to scoring on numerous occasions, but at half time the score remained at 3-0. Kingswood tried hard to equalise in the second half and only determined tackling by St Andrew’s kept them out. St Andrew’s scored their second try when Womersley went over after a good movement. The Conversion kick again failed. Kingswood came back strongly.
A cross-kick by fly-half Wellington was followed up by D. van Niekerk on the left wing, who fell on the ball as it crossed the line.

Description: Kingswood beat St. Andrew’s 16-9 in an action-packed game played in overcast in wet conditions at St. Andrew’s at the week-end. Kingswood dominated most of the line-outs and scrums and tackled extremely well. Kingswood scored first when White, flank, followed up a kick at goal by Becker which failed. St. Andrew’s mishandled and White gathered to score under the posts. Becker converted (5-0). Chase, the St. Andrew’s centre, replied with a magnificent penalty kick (5-3). Watson, Kingswood eighth man, playing an excellent game, was next to score when he took the ball at the back of the line-out on the St. Andrew’s line and barged his way over. Becker failed with the conversion (8-3). This was also the half-time score. The score remained at 8-3 for the next 15 minutes before Anderson, Kingswood centre, intercepted a pass to run 50 yards and score under the poles. Turner converted (13-3). Chase kicked two more penalties for St. Andrew’s, making the score 13-9. Kingswood came back strongly and completely dominated the opposition. In the closing stages of the game the Kingswood right-wing, R. O’Neill, had a good run and dived over in the corner. The conversion failed (1619) [16-9]. The score remained 16-9 to the end. Muir clinched matters when Rudman, front ranker, fell over the line from a loose scrum. Kingswood players who did well were Moss, (front rank), Collier (hooker) and Matthews (lock) while Harvey, Meyer (flank) and Killian (fly-half) shone for Muir.

Description: Kingswood College beat the touring St. John’s side from Johannesburg by 13 points to 6 in an action-packed game here on Saturday. St. John s scored their first try in the 14th minute when their fly-half, Gordon-Bennett, went over to score near the posts. The conversion failed. In the next few minutes the home team failed to get going when two penalties failed in the 17th and 20th minute. St. John’s, however, made good use of their opportunities and increased their lead to six points with a penalty in the 22nd minute. In the closing minutes of the first half, the Kingswood College full-back C. Ingram put over a penalty kick to make the half-time score 3-6 in St. John’s favour. The Kingswood flank, A. Bradfield, who had an excellent game, backed up well to score a beautiful try near the posts after having dribbled a loose ball for 30 yards. Ingram converted. Then in the 20th minute the Kingswood College right wing, P. Gosling, had a good run after picking up a loose ball and scored under the posts. Ingram again converted. Thus the final score was 13-6 to Kingswood, a well-deserved victory to the home side.

Description: In one of the most evenly balanced matches of the season, Kingswood 1st XV beat a strong Gill side by 11 points to 3 on Gane Field. Play switched from one side’s favour to the other with no ultimate result in the first half, with penalties missed by both teams. There was no score by half-time. In the 12th minute of the second half, however, a score began to take shape. David van Niekerk, the Kingswood left-wing, had a sparkling 70-yard run, handing off two defenders and outrunning the Gill full-back before scoring under the posts in one of the most spectacular tries seen on Gane Field. Full-back Ingram converted. In the 20th minute, after a full line movement, Gill replied with a try far out. The conversion failed. Kingswood full-back Ingram put over an excellent penalty two-thirds the way through the second half, increasing the home team’s lead to 8-3. Although Gill definitely won more line-outs, Kingswood made better use of the ball from theirs. It was from one such line out that Carl van Niekerk broke and ran a dashing 50 yards before scoring an excellent try far out in the 27th minute. The conversion failed. Without any alteration to the score, Kingswood won this exciting game by 11 points to 3.

Description: In a hard, exciting match played on Gane Field, St. Andrew’s managed to defeat Kingswood by six points to three. St. Andrew’s left-wing, Womersley, went over for a good try in the 7th minute, when Gosling badly missed his tackle, to make the score 3-0. The conversion failed. Kingswood missed their chance of equalising when a penalty failed in the 18th minute. In spite of the excellent play by the I Kingswood centres, the good tackling of the St. Andrew’s back-line prevented them from scoring on several occasions. Halfway into the second half, the ball travelled along the St. Andrew’s back-line from a loose scrum to left-wing Womersley, who again beat Gosling to score his second try. The conversion failed. Shortly afterwards, from a set scrum in the St. Andrew’s 25, the Kingswood fly-half Wellington cross-kicked. Bennett failed to gather the ball for St. Andrew’s, and the speedy Kingswood left-wing, D. van Niekerk, went over near the comer. The conversion failed. It was a spectacular game, played as rugby should be played, with two well-matched sides each just waiting for the other to make a mistake.

Description: TWELVE Kingswood College pupils who plan to cycle from Grahamstown to Cape Town in November to raise money for rugby equipment have one major problem — no sponsors. The idea of a cycle marathon was born when, after buying a video machine to record their matches as a coaching aid, they found they had no money left in the till. The ride was suggested to a schoolmaster, Mr W Frye, by senior pupils Russell Kroon and Bevin Hare, and with the permission of the headmaster, Mr Trevor Long, plans forged ahead. Two major bicycle manufacturers have agreed to supply the cycles and spare parts and to service the cycles during the trip. The pupils plan to leave on November 28 and arrive in Cape Town on December 4. A bus will accompany them. It will carry their food, sleeping equipment and other necessities. A bakkie will carry spare bikes and parts. Their route takes them through Uitenhage, along the Garden Route to Cape Town. The 12 are Bevin Hare, Russell Kroon, Bruce Clayton, Christiaan Landman, Gregor Kamstraat, Ian Ingills, Mark Welsh, Jonathan Swanepoel, Andrew Thompson, David Turner, Rory Cox and Gary Handley. Anybody wanting to help can telephone Mr Frye at Gane House, Kingswood College.

Description: Muir beat Kingswood 11-8 in an inter-schools’ game played in gale conditions at Uitenhage at the week-end. Kingswood played with the wind in the first half but failed to make enough use of it. A hard forward struggled developed. As the game progressed the Kingswood pack got on top in both line-outs and scrums, but failed to make use of the ball. The Muir backs and loose forwards were quick on defence and did not allow the Kingswood backs room to move in. Muir were first to score when a loose maul developed after a misunderstanding between Kingswood half-backs. Harvey, Muir No. 8, gained possession and forced his way over for McLaughlin to convert. Ingram, Kingswood full-back, put over a penalty after a scrum infringement to make the score 5-3, which was also the half-time score. Soon after play resumed Muir were awarded a penalty which failed. In gathering the ball under his posts Kingswood lock Matthews knocked it on. From the tight scrum that followed Collett, Kingswood scrum-half, went offsides and McLaughlin make no mistake with the penalty. Turner scored an opportunistic try for Kingswood when the Muir backs mishandled. Ingram converted. In the closing stages of the game the Muir scrum-half used the wind well to put the side on attack and time after time sent the Kingswood team back to defence. It was from one such kick that the ball rolled and Rudman, the Muir front-rank, fell over the line to make the final score- 11-8.
