Description: UNBEATEN KINGSWOOD COLLEGE XV RUGBY
This is the 1948 Kingswood College FirstXV which has an unbeaten record this season. Left to right (Standing): Mr.R.T.S.Norwood (coach), J.Skirt, Q.Robinson, M.L.Pocock, G.A.Poulton, R.Lederie, A.J.Ross, Mr.Jack Slater (advisor), Sitting: H.E.Baker, D.E.Dold, J.T.Slater, P.de V.Booysen (Capt), W.J.du Plessis, E.H.FAirley, J.D. du Toit, In Fornt: D.Wallace and L.Vosloo (Photo): Hepburn and Jeans With les than 140 boys over fourteen years of age to choose from this Kingswood College has so far this season, achieved field-a record of which, the old Kingswoodian Rugby giants of the past men like Bennie Osler, his brother, Stanley, Jack Slater, Tiny Francis and Jack Dobie, maywell be proud. To date twelve matches have been played and won, with a total of 205 points for and 51 against Kingswood. The outstanding Success of the season have been victories over Dale College (who had an unbeaten record amongst order schools). Rondebosch (Stellenbosch in the Western Province) and Durban B.H.S. (who had neither ost nor had their line crossed in Natal), Kingswood have still to play Grey College on Monday, August 2, before going on tour to play pretoria, Sprins and Jeppe High schools, so that they are still four hard fences to cross before the unbeaten record is achieved. The team, however , has improved vastly in the last few weeks-in two matches last week it scored 88 points-and hopes to run high. The success of the team has been due to all-round merit: the line is fast all four three quaters do better than 10.8 for the 100 yards, and the forwards have shown plenty of ability to get the ball to their line and to make progress on their own. The captain P.de V. Booysen, is a powerful and deeptive runner in the centre, and is backed up by two fine wings, E.Fairley and W.J.du Plessis, While B.Dold, at fly-half, ets his three quarters off at fine speed. J.Slater, son of Jack Slater, the Springbok wing, has been the main strength amoungst the forwards, being at the head of almost every forwar rush. Amoung the others it would be invidious to single out players for special mention, as all have done their fair share. Rugby Kingswood on Tour A Thrilling Finish Johannesburg - A last minute try gave Kingswood victory Springs High School by11 points to eight. KIngswood campedon Springs line for the firt twenty minutes, but on;y du Plessis could beat the defence to score an unconverted try. Du Plessis injured a knee and went off the field till half time. Springs Scored a forward try, which was converted, to take the lead. Tired, the Kingswood Boys fought back and booysen beat six men in a converted . Springs equalised with a good penalty, Slater, Poulton and Wallace were now outstanding for Kingswood in a fighting finish. A forward rush and quick heel gave Booysen a chance to dive over for a thrilling finish. Fine win for Kingswood Kingswood College had a fine 19-6 win against Pretoria High School at Pretoria on Teusday. According to a message from that town, the Kingswood threes were in splendid form, showing great speed and were the main factor in the team's victory. Dold, the fly-half, scored under the posts after Pretoria had led by a penalty goal. Booysen was too good for his opposite number and on two occasions sent du Plessis over for tries after lengthy breaks. On another occassion Fairly lost the ball under the posts when about to dot down. Volk kicked two penalty goals for Pretoria High. Kingswood won the majority of set scrums - In facy the visitors played their opponents to a standstill.
