Description: SALISBURY. — Eastern Province Schools, playing the more enterprising rugby, running with the ball at every opportunity, ran out comfortable winners by 36 points (six goals, a try and a penalty goal), to 11 (a goal, a try, and a penalty goal) against a disappointing Griqualand West Schools team, who could never get into top gear and were 8-21 behind at half-time. Eastern Province thus won all three of their games in the 1970 Craven Week tournament. The Eastern Province scrum-half, C. van Niekerk was the outstanding plaver on the field. He fed his fly-half well and initiated several good tries with some fine breaks around the base of the scrum. For Griqualand West eighth man Erasmus had a good game. Eastern Province’s points were scored through tries by left-wing Van Niekerk (two), centre Katherine, lock M. Botha, lock F. Botha, scrum-half C. van Niekerk, right-wing Watson (one try each), centre Cowley (five conversions), and fly-half Horn, who kicked a penalty goal and conversion. Griqualand West’s points came from a try by scrum-half Watt a try by centre Pienaar, a conversion and penalty goal by their fly- half Jooste.

Description: Rugby 1970 KINGSWOOD BEATS MUIR Kingswood had their first win of the season when they beat Muir here on Wednesday by 14 points to 8. It was a hard game characterised by solid scrumming, hard loose scrums and good tackling by both sides. Soon after the start Vorster missed his man and the Muir wing dived over in the corner for their full-back to convert. In the 7th minute C. van Niekerk scored a try after a good passing movement with Wienand. Salmon missed the conversion. Kingswood made mistakes throughout the game although only one was converted into points. In the 17th minute Wellington at flyhalf kicked ahead and C van Niekerk picked up to score under the posts for Wellington to convert. Kingswood went into the lead with a try by Bradfield after Kingswood hooked Muir’s ball from a set scrum. Salmon missed the conversion. In the closing stages of the game Becker scored in the corner after C. van Niekerk had broken blind. Salmon again missed the conversion.

In the closing minutes of the first half, the Kingswood College full-back C. Ingram put over a penalty kick to make the half-time score 3-6 in St. John’s favour. The Kingswood flank, A. Bradfield, who had an excellent game, backed up well to score a beautiful try near the posts after having dribbled a loose ball for 30 yards. Ingram converted. Then in the 20th minute the Kingswood College right wing, P. Gosling, had a good run after picking up a loose ball and scored under the posts. Ingram again converted. Thus the final score was 13-6 to Kingswood, a well-deserved victory to the home side.
