Description Rugby 1970 Article 1: Kingswood wins even match In one of the most evenly balanced matches of the season, Kingswood 1st XV beat a strong Gill side by 11 points to 3 on Gane Field. Play switched from one side’s favour to the other with no ultimate result in the first half, with penalties missed by both teams. There was no score by half-time. In the 12th minute of the second half, however, a score began to take shape. David van Niekerk, the Kingswood left-wing, had a sparkling 70-yard run, handing off two defenders and outrunning the Gill full-back before scoring under the posts in one of the most spectacular tries seen on Gane Field. Full-back Ingram converted. In the 20th minute, after a full line movement, Gill replied with a try far out. The conversion failed. Kingswood full-back Ingram put over an excellent penalty two-thirds the way through the second half, increasing the home team’s lead to 8-3. Although Gill definitely won more line-outs, Kingswood made better use of the ball from theirs. It was from one such line out that Carl van Niekerk broke and ran a dashing 50 yards before scoring an excellent try far out in the 27th minute. The conversion failed. Without any alteration to the score, Kingswood won this exciting game by 11 points to 3. Article 2: KINGSWOOD … 11 GIL … 3 GRAHAMSTOWN - In a very exciting rugby game, Kingswood beat Gill 11-3 but the game was more even than the score suggests. The honours broke even in the first half, with Kingswood winning the line-outs and Gill the scrums and the teams changed over with a blank scoresheet. After the resumption and against the run of play D. van Niekerk, the Kirkwood [Kingswood] left wing, collected a loose ball in his own 25 and ran 180 yards to score under the posts. Ingram converted. Gill counter-attacked strongly and were rewarded with a good try by their No 8 Van der Spuy. The conversion failed. Kingswood went further ahead when Ingram, full-back, put over a penalty and then the try of the match came when C. van Niekerk, the Kingswood scrum-half, broke on the blind-side, kicked ahead and won a 40 yard race to dot down. The kick failed but Kingswood deservedly won 11-3.
