Description Waiters 1980 Grahamstown pupils plan fund-raising ride TWELVE Kingswood College pupils who plan to cycle from Grahamstown to Cape Town in November to raise money for rugby equipment have one major problem — no sponsors. The idea of a cycle marathon was born when, after buying a video machine to record their matches as a coaching aid, they found they had no money left in the till. The ride was suggested to a schoolmaster, Mr W Frye, by senior pupils Russell Kroon and Bevin Hare, and with the permission of the headmaster, Mr Trevor Long, plans forged ahead. Two major bicycle manufacturers have agreed to supply the cycles and spare parts and to service the cycles during the trip. The pupils plan to leave on November 28 and arrive in Cape Town on December 4. A bus will accompany them. It will carry their food, sleeping equipment and other necessities. A bakkie will carry spare bikes and parts. Their route takes them through Uitenhage, along the Garden Route to Cape Town. The 12 are Bevin Hare, Russell Kroon, Bruce Clayton, Christiaan Landman, Gregor Kamstraat, Ian Ingills, Mark Welsh, Jonathan Swanepoel, Andrew Thompson, David Turner, Rory Cox and Gary Handley. Anybody wanting to help can telephone Mr Frye at Gane House, Kingswood College.
